Last week was characterised by another edition of Royal Ascot, which – as usual – brought much excellent racing experience. For me personally, one of the strongest moments was the performance of Highland Reel in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes and his fight for sixth Gr.1 triumph. Three days later, in the Hardwicke Stakes, his full brother Idaho took the victory and their dam Hveger was the first mare in this century to have two black-type winners in a single royal meeting.
She is the first, and so far the only one, to have managed this in a single year but there are more dams – a total of eleven – to have produced at least two stakes winners in the first eighteen editions of Royal Ascot in this century. The most prominent among them is the winning half-sister to Gr.1 winners Footstepsinthesand and Pedro the Great, Frappe, who has produced three such winners. The great record of Frappe started in 2005 when her daughter Thakafaat by Unfuwain won the Gr.2 Ribblesdale Stakes. Six years later, her another two-year-old progeny Power by Oasis Dream won at Royal Ascot. The future winner of the Irish 2,000 Guineas won the Gr.2 Coventry Stakes and the ability of Frappe to produce precocious two-year-olds was confirmed in 2014 when her daughter Curvy by Galileo went in Thakafaat’s footsteps and won the Ribblesdale Stakes too. It is worth emphasising that each of her Ascot winners is sired by a different stallion.
A well-presented table is worth a thousand words, so instead of more commentaries we offer a list of all dams who have produced, in this century, two and more stakes winners at Royal Ascot. It will come as no surprise that these mares are more or less daughters of very successful damsires and you will surely notice that Danehill is the only sire represented by two daughters. Nearly all of them were active at stud in England or Ireland, the only exception being the South African champion Horse Chestnut, based in the United States. He is the sire of Lynnwood Chase, foaled in the United States, where her progeny were born – full brothers Pisco Sour and Cannock Chase, who won the Tercentennary Stakes in 2011 and 2014.
