Australian Breeding Season 2015 in the Spirit of Nostalgia for Encosta de Lago

Early last February one of the most successful Australian stallions, Encosta de Lago, was retired aged twenty-one. Looking at the data from the last year’s stud season in Australia, the first one after many years without Encosta de Lago, one cannot fail to notice a considerable demand of breeders for his sons and grandsons. The demand is especially marked in annual comparison.

The demand for the blood of Encosta de Lago is confirmed by the list of the most demanded stallions in the last season, headed by the debuting, muscular Gr.2 winning sprinter Deep Field, the grandson of Encosta de Lago, with Rubick, the son of Encosta de Lago, on the third place, also a debutant last season. The sire of Deep Field, Northern Meteor, who died prematurely three years ago aged eight, had “just” five active sons at stud in Australia but each of them covered over 100 mares and together a total of 847 mares while 47 Danehill's sons covered just nearly 300 mares more.

The data based on the up-to-date information published last week in the Australian Stud Book show that the demand grew most steeply for the stallions of the Fairy King line, mostly represented by the stallions of the Encosta de Lago’s line. While a year ago the Australian Stud Book registered, as of the same date, 1,1015 mares covered in 2014, the 2015 data show 1,457 mares. It was mainly thanks to the progeny of Encosta de Lago that the number of mares covered by the stallions of the ruling Northern Dancer's line increased. The share of the Danehill branch remained roughly flat (in 2014 6,944 mares, in 2015 6,997 mares), the number of mares covered by stallions of the Sadler’s Wells line grows, namely thanks to three sons of High Chaparral (Toronado, So You Think and Dundeel). The Halo line is on the increase too – or rather More Than Ready and his sons and grandsons who covered a total of 888 Australian broodmares last year.

3 ... number of sons who covered 100 and more mares

Even so Danehill’s clan remains the strongest. Given its long-term dominance and huge impact on broodmares, its influence no longer grows in the direct line, on the contrary it helps other lines to grow that connect well with Danehill’s blood.
