The Canadian breeder E. P. Taylor entered the history of the thoroughbred as the breeder of Northern Dancer, a top racehorse and, above all, an absolutely substantial stallion who had an unprecedented impact on breeding as such. On Friday, Baden-Badenu held the traditional yearling sale, the most important sale of the German calendar. Looking at the list of stallions whose progeny was demanded most, one finds something that is very interesting and very unlikely to be repeated outside Germany. Judging by the average price, the first two places are occupied (only stallions with at least six products are included) by the sons of In The Wings, Soldier Hollow and Adlerflug. It was a surprise when Keen Ice beat this year’s unbeaten Triple Crown winner American Pharoah in the Travers Stakes on Sunday. Keen Ice, for whom the triumph in the Travers Stakes after previous places in the Haskel Invitational and Belmont Stakes was the first victory in a black-type race, deserves attention not just thanks to the beating of the first Triple Crown winner since 1978 but also thanks to his pedigree which is exceptional in some ways.
